Headwaters of the Snake River

Day 9: Yellowstone to Moran Junction The road south out of Yellowstone and into Grand Teton N.P. crosses the Continental Divide from east to west at about 7,900 ft. and picks up the headwaters of the Snake River as it descends into the Jackson Hole valley. Everything about this ride promised to be great. The Tetons would be on our west as we crisscrossed over the Snake. Wildlife abounds in this area. And the road is nearly all flat or downhill. And the skies did not look too threatening.

We'd now checked off the following wildlife on our list:
  • pronghorn
  • bison
  • elk
  • grizzly bear
All we had left was a moose and I'd seen many along this stretch of road on a previous trip so my optimism was high. And sure enough, right by the telltale sign of tourists' cars pulled off to the side of the road stood our final quest.

The Tetons looking West from Moran Junction

The Tetons always look magnificent, even when their peaks and glaciers are partially obscured by the clouds. They made a wonderful backdrop to the end of a great trip.

I haven't said enough (or even anything yet) about traveling with John. John is a great companion, always upbeat and enthusiastic, supremely self-sufficient and a strong cyclist, never picky or demanding about where we go, when we leave, what we eat, or where we stay. If he could only choose the correct basketball team to root for he'd be perfect. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to many more cycling trips together, until our legs just won't peddle any longer...
